The brief

Sapphire Labs is a research and development laboratory that builds human centric technologies that help people experience the world in new ways. The identity has to do that work instead. The brief was a single mark that carries the founder's name, says something honest about how the laboratory operates, and stays readable everywhere a software business would appears - a favicon, an app icon, a repository avatar, a signature block. That ruled out illustration and detail from the start. The mark had to survive being reduced to a few pixels, work in a single flat color, and still be recognizable as one shape rather than a picture of something.

Key decisions

The name came first. Sapphire, Zapphire, SZapphire and Sapphire Labs were set side by side, and the exercise exposed what the mark should be built from: the two letters the founder's own name already gives - S for Steven, Z for Zafeiriou. A monogram was the obvious route, but drawing an S and a Z as letterforms produces a mark that reads as type, not as an icon. The decision was to find a single geometric module that could be repeated to describe both letters at once. The gemstone in the name supplied that module. A sapphire cut was drawn and then deliberately abstracted through a sequence of steps - brilliant cut, kite, hexagonal step cut, briolette, pear, teardrop - each pass stripping facets until the geometry collapsed into an elongated capsule with a hollow center. That capsule became the unit. Two of them, identical and rotated 180 degrees against each other, interlock to form a mark that reads as an S and a Z depending on which stroke the eye follows. Both shapes are drawn at 50% fill opacity rather than solid. This was a meaning decision as much as a visual one. The transparent outer edges state that the company hides nothing and is true to its word, while the overlap at the center - where the two halves cross and the tone doubles to solid - stands for a solid foundation. The construction was then rebuilt on a geometric grid so the corner radii, stroke widths and the overlap band are all derived from the same set of dimensions instead of drawn by eye, and the finished mark ships as a two-path SVG that works in one color.

Outcome

The mark is used as the primary identity for Sapphire Labs across the laboratory's website and digital presence.
