Olympus Patch Packaging
A packaging solution for 10cm x 7cm embroidery patches
The brief
An embroidery patch is a tactile object, and customers want to see and inspect the real thing before they buy. The packaging for the 55Peaks Mt. Olympus collection had to do two jobs at once: protect the patch on the shelf and put it fully on display. The solution is a two-part system - a printed backing card that frames each patch and carries the collection's identity, sealed inside a transparent outer bag that shields the product while leaving it completely visible. The result is a retail-ready package designed to hang cleanly in the 55Peaks store in Litochoro, at the foot of Mt. Olympus.
Key decisions
The packaging was designed as two coordinated elements: the decorative backing card on the inside and the protective outer bag. Because the patch itself is the selling point, the outer bag had to be transparent so the customer could inspect the embroidery directly. Within the project's price range, two materials were viable - polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). Material choice was not treated as a purely technical decision: the bag is the first thing a customer touches when they pick the product up, so texture, clarity, and overall feel were weighed alongside cost. PP was selected for the best combination of look and hand-feel. Two further decisions shaped the format. For display, both peg-hanging and an organized display box were considered; the euro-hole hanging option was chosen because it set up faster and worked with the display tools the client already had in the shop. For sealing, a self-adhesive strip with a peel-off cover was chosen over a heat-seal machine - the machine would have meant an added equipment purchase and a worse opening experience, while the self-seal allows quick assembly and lets the customer open the package cleanly. Several bag samples were then sourced and tested with the actual product until one fit comfortably: roomy enough to hold both the backing card and the patch, easy to assemble into a finished unit, and fitted with a euro hole for hanging. The final bag measures 120 x 180 mm, sized slightly larger than the 115 x 185 mm backing card and the 70 x 100 mm patch it protects.
